One Of My Stories Has 170K Views, But!
They’re all external and I’m still broke af
So, as you might have surmised from the title, one of my stories has a bunch of views and no money to show for it.
Now, do I have the skills to present a sensible, compelling argument about the fact external views help the platform grow and Medium should still reward this in some way? No.
But am I going to draw a valuable lesson from the fact that many people found and read my story, even if it gave me no financial gain? Also no.
I’m just here to complain.
This story I wrote in November 2020 just surpassed 170,000 views. I never had that kind of success before — or after, to be honest. It was just this one time and frankly, I don’t know what I did right. Maybe I nailed the title, maybe it was plain luck. Who knows.
Other stories of mine have accumulated a few thousand views over time and given me a couple of hundred dollars — which was nice, don’t get me wrong. But that one? Nope. 98% of views are external, and we all know those do not count. And this pisses me off because I lost the opportunity to brag about Making Big Bucks On The Internet with my family and prove to them that regular people can, in fact, make money writing online.
