One of my friends volunteered at an Etruscan burial site in Bologna (northern Italy) for several summers, back in the mid 2000s. She was not an archaeologist herself, but she spent a lot of time unearthing small objects under the supervision of experts. Most of the stuff they found were everyday items of little value (assorted pottery, combs, beads, buttons), but one time they found a small jar, intact, that had contained some kind of ointment. The ointment had dried up, but when they opened it she swears a flowery smell was still perceivable.
