I'm not sure what you mean when you say borrowing terms from slang and vernacular language is cultural appropriation: languages evolve constantly, adopting terms here and there all the time. If European languages didn't incorporate (and often distort) local dialects and popular jargon, Slavic and Arabic terms, we'd still be speaking Latin! Anyway, interesting article!
