If there’s something that annoys me immensely when I read or watch historical fiction is a woman refusing to wear her corset to show how much of a rebel she is. It just screams “I, the author, have little to no idea how things worked in different eras, can’t be bothered to learn about it before writing about said era, and I’m also about as original as a King Kong remake”. Seriously, that trope needs to die. Not only it stems from the misconception that the corset is an instrument of torture and/or oppression (your main character can’t breathe or move comfortably in her stays? Homegirl needs to find a new corset maker, because her current one is a dirty scammer) but it is also boring as hell.
