I don't doubt the hazards of filming in a nuclear fallout zone, but it needs to be said that people (and actors especially) at the time did not exactly lead a super healthy lifestyle.

It’s not just the chain-smoking and the alcohol and the drugs - it’s popular medications everyone used that have since been withdrawn from the market for their dangerous side effects, extremely toxic pesticides that were gleefully sprayed on crops by the ton, common products that were not particularly wholesome to produce and/or to use (lead paint, asbestos, kerosene and coal stoves) and a hell of a lot of other things.

The 50s and 60s were a wild time - but I have no doubt people in the future will look at some stuff we use now and go, yikes!
