Funny how languages work! The Italian version for “the late” is “il povero” meaning “the poor, the unfortunate.” Elderly people still say “il povero Carlo” (“poor Carlo”) or “la mia povera mamma” (“my poor mother”) to refer to somebody who has recently died. It’s going out of use in younger generations, though.
