Filmmakers lately seem to think that people will only like a period movie if everything ( from language to clothing, from furniture to values) is adapted to modern taste. Well, Mia Wasikowska wore giant leg-o-mutton sleeves and high-neck blouses in Crimson Peak - and it was still a success. Characters in 2020 Emma wore funny-looking hats and weird regency curls and the movie grossed 26 millions worldwide. The later series of Downton Abbey heavily featured baggy, early-1920s day dresses in muted colors that really don't look flattering to a modern eye, and still - massively popular show! It's almost like audiences can actually understand that the past is different from the present, and the future will probably also look different from today, without experiencing an existential crisis!
